Minister of Foreign Affairs of Finland Elina Valtonen said that the only and most credible security guarantee for Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression now and in future.
Similar statement was made by the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskiy, having listed Ukraine’s membership in NATO as one of the options for security guarantees for Ukraine.
“I think in the long term the only credible security guarantee is Article 5 of the Washington Treaty – so NATO membership essentially,” Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen stated during her visit in Kyiv.
“And we are supporting Ukraine’s NATO membership further down the line and hopefully not in (the) too-distant future”, Valtonen assured.
Becoming the 32nd NATO member has been one of the main aspirations of Ukrainian political leadership. Some NATO member have expressed their unwillingness in this regard due to various reasons.
“Three years ago nobody thought that Finland would be joining NATO, or Sweden for that matter,” Finnish Foreign Minister said. “So here we are, you never know.”
