Former Polish President Aleksander Kwasniewski warned against the idea of freezing the war in Ukraine without guarantees of a lasting peace and emhasized that such a scenario would be beneficial to Moscow.
Kwasniewski regards freezing the war without a just peace as the worst option among other options for potential negotiations in the near future.
“Of course, this may look more attractive than the ongoing war, because war means that people continue to die. But a frozen conflict is not peace, it is just a frozen war, and this, I think, is in the best interest of Putin”, Kwasniewski noted.
According to the former Polish president, during a potential freeze of the war, the Kremlin’s dictator will have time to regroup the military and also produce more weaponry.
“And that would be tragic for Ukraine, because Ukraine would neither regain its lost territories nor be able to plan its future with confidence without exact knowledge of the future war prospects”, Kwasniewski stressed.
He continued that this would not contribute to Ukraine’s progress in the EU accession negotiations.
“For Ukraine, a frozen war, which is not peace, is a very bad option. It also creates great uncertainty in the future, because we do not know when Putin will start attacking again,” Kwasniewski noted.
“It is important to remember that the main problem today is not Ukraine or what Ukraine wants, but Putin and his aggressive, criminal policy. He wants all of Ukraine, not half, not a quarter, but all of it, and he will try to achieve this in various ways. We must understand this,” the former Polish president emphasized.
