According to Spiegel, the case of an alleged spy working for the Federal Intelligence Service (BND) is more severe than initially believed. The BND employee, who is currently under arrest, was approached by the Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation (FSB) to provide data on the location of Ukrainian army artillery and air defense positions.
The FSB instructed the BND agent to extract GPS data from HIMARS multiple launch rocket systems provided by the United States and the IRIS-T air defense system provided by Germany. The employee was rewarded with a six-figure sum, which was found during the detention.
However, sources have suggested that it is unlikely that any data was actually transferred. On December 21, the German federal prosecutor’s office arrested the BND employee on charges of high treason for allegedly spying for Russia.
