German politician: Ukraine should be allowed to strike deep inside Russia

There is no reason why Ukraine should limit the use of weapons only to its own territory, says Johann Wadephul.

The deputy head of the faction of the opposition bloc of the CDU/CSU Christian parties in the Bundestag, Johann Wadephul, called to allow Ukraine to use German weapons on targets on the territory of Russia. “Neither at the international legal nor at the political level, there is no justification why Ukraine is not allowed to attack targets in Russia,” said the foreign policy expert and former member of the board of the “Petersburg Dialogue” in an interview on May 13 with the Berlin newspaper Tagesspiegel.

The Chancellor of Germany, Olaf Scholz, recently stated that an agreement was reached with the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, that German weapons should not be used for strikes on Russian territory. J. Wadephul disagrees with this.

“Germany should help Ukraine, not tie its hands”

“Why should an attacked country limit itself to defense only on its own territory? Ukraine should be able to disrupt logistics and supplies on the other side of the border to be able to stop the war of aggression. Germany should effectively help Ukraine instead of binding it hands,” the Christian-democratic politician emphasized.

Wadephul noted that Ukraine must certainly remember about “proportionality”, but at the same time emphasized that Kyiv already adheres to it. “Unlike Russia, Ukraine limits itself when striking industrial facilities, fuel depots, and transport and military infrastructure. It, unlike Russia, does not bomb residential complexes, hospitals, or orphanages,” the politician explained.
