Head of Munich Conference: West must do more to help Ukraine defend itself against Russia

The head of the Munich Security Conference, Christoph Heusgen, has called on the West to do more to help Ukraine defend itself against Russian aggression. He wrote this in a article for Tagesspiegel on Monday.

Heusgen warned that merely proclaiming unwavering support for Ukraine was not enough. According to him, Ukraine’s partners’ actions have so far fallen short of their words, and this needs to change.

Russian President Vladimir Putin misjudged all aspects of the war when he launched the invasion of Ukraine last year, the text noted.

“He thought his army was strong, China fully supported him, Ukraine was weak and the West was divided. He could not have been more wrong,” the piece said.

Now, according to the article, Putin’s only hope is “that his resolve is stronger than that of his opponents and he can win a war of attrition. We must prove him wrong again.”

“We must do everything possible to help Ukraine… We must provide Ukraine with the weapons and ammunition it needs to repel Russia’s war of aggression. Freedom must be protected. The sooner Putin realises that he will not achieve his goals in Ukraine, the sooner peace can be achieved and the suffering of the Ukrainian people can end,” the material said.

The head of the Munich Security Conference, Christoph Heusgen, regularly opposes any “red lines” in providing military assistance to Ukraine.

And earlier in February, Heusgen called for deputising Russia before reviving German-Russian relations.
