Krzysztof Gawkowski: Russian intelligence services are trying to recruit Polish citizens to destabilize the country

In an interview on RMF FM on January 18, Poland’s Deputy Prime Minister and Digitalization Minister Krzysztof Gawkowski claimed that Russian intelligence agencies were attempting to recruit Polish citizens to cause instability in the country ahead of the next elections.

Mr. Gawkowski noted that Russian intelligence services are reaching out to Darknet pros who are offering Polish individuals “thousands of euros” to commit acts against their own nation.

According to the minister, Russian intelligence also wants to employ Poles to disseminate disinformation online.

“I will remind everyone… that if someone enters into any kind of relations with a foreign intelligence service, this is Article 130 of the Penal Code, and for this there is a prison sentence,” said Deputy Prime Minister Gawkowski, warning everyone not to act against their own nation. Earlier in January, Gawkowski pledged to unveil a strategy for safeguarding the elections online. Collaboration on this project will be extended to all parties proposing presidential candidates.

On May 18, 2025, Poland will hold its first round of presidential elections. The second round will take place on June 1 if needed.
