PACE Adopts Resolution to Combat Russian Propaganda

The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe adopted the resolution “Propaganda and Freedom of Information in Europe” by a majority vote on Tuesday, October 1.

The Assembly acknowledges that propaganda is a fundamental component of the war against democracy waged by authoritarian regimes, including the Russian Federation. The document emphasises the necessity of effective and coordinated measures to combat harmful propaganda, encouraging states to develop comprehensive strategies that defend the freedom of information and expression.

The resolution also emphasizes the recognition of the Russian Orthodox Church as a propaganda tool for the Kremlin and calls on countries to impose personal sanctions against Russian propagandists.

It is important for the member states of the Council of Europe to focus on expanding sanctions against the Russian propaganda machine and affiliated individuals.
