Defence Minister Boris Pistorius and Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock are the most popular German politicians among the public. The war in Ukraine is the second most important topic for Germans, according to the results of a representative poll by Deutschlandtrend, released on 6 April.
The most popular politician in Germany is Defence Minister Boris Pistorius. He was chosen by 53% of respondents. Pistorius topped the ranking by a large margin last month. German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock came in second with 42%. The work of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz is satisfied with 37% of respondents.
Moreover, Pistorius is the only politician among the candidates with a positive trust balance. Even Baerbock already has more “haters” than “fans” (50% vs 42%).
The war in Ukraine is the second main topic
The main problem that the German authorities should address first and foremost is climate change (26%).
Russia’s war against Ukraine was named the most important topic by 25%. Back in June, it was dominating the public discourse.
The attention of Germans to the problem of migration and refugees has increased significantly – by 6% compared to January (to 19%).
Support for Ukraine
The actions of the German authorities to help Ukraine are supported by 46% of Germans. This is the highest figure since July 2022.
Respondents also positively assessed the government’s efforts to provide the country with energy (43%). According to the authors of the study, this is due to the fact that Germany survived the winter without interruptions in gas supply and without power outages.
Respondents are less satisfied with the policy on migrants and refugees (30%) and with the support of citizens in connection with rising prices (29%). The least supported among citizens are the government’s measures to combat climate change (27%).
The sociological institute Infratest dimap regularly conducts public opinion polls in Germany on behalf of the first German television channel ARD. The latest Deutschlandtrend survey was conducted on 3-5 April by telephone and online interviews. It involved 1304 respondents.
