Russia is conducting an information and psychological operation in Poland to instill fear and helplessness among the population amidst the flooding in the country’s southwest. This was reported by Poland’s Cyber Defense Forces, who noted that Moscow is using selective information techniques to manipulate public sentiment.
“Due to the floods in southwestern Poland, we are dealing with an information and psychological operation orchestrated by the Russian Federation. The apparatus of influence is utilizing techniques of selective information dissemination in cyberspace, aiming to provoke emotions of fear and helplessness among recipients. One of the elements of this operation is an attempt to undermine trust in the country’s security structures,” stated the Polish cyber defenders on social media platform X.
Once again, Russia is attempting to exploit natural disasters to spread panic and destabilize societies. Poland’s Cyber Defense Forces have urged citizens to remain calm and critically evaluate the information circulating on social media and other media platforms. “In particular, beware of content designed to trigger a strong emotional reaction based on images of suffering and destruction,” they emphasized in their statement.
Therefore, it is crucial to enhance information literacy among the population, especially in times of crisis. It is important to understand that such information attacks are aimed at creating chaos, undermining trust in state institutions, and sowing doubts about their effectiveness.
In response to the natural disaster, Poland’s State Fire Service decided to establish a no-fly zone over the Oder River, where flood recovery operations are currently underway. They announced on X that the use of drones, paragliders, gliders, and even kites is prohibited in this area. This measure aims not only to ensure the safety of rescue operations but also to limit the possibility of spreading disinformation.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has also warned citizens about fake reports of breaches in flood protection embankments, which are part of Russia’s psychological operation.
The flooding situation in Poland demonstrates how Russia uses natural disasters to destabilize societies and spread panic. Poland’s Cyber Defense Forces are actively working to counter these operations, urging citizens to remain vigilant and think critically.
It is essential to understand that such operations are not limited to one country or event. They are part of Russia’s broader strategy of information influence, aimed at destabilizing the region and weakening democratic institutions.
