An Irish MP has been recruited by Russian intelligence to serve as a mole and emissary. Irish Prime Minister Simon Harris is unsurprised by the development.
Two Irish senior officials in the government and judiciary verified the information for Politico, as reported by the Sunday Times correspondent in Dublin, John Mooney.
The MP was not detained or charged, as officials stated that he did not commit any crimes by establishing relationships with Kremlin emissaries at the extensive Russian embassy in Dublin.
Consequently, the officials declared that the deputy’s name should not be made public.
Since Moscow launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Russian agents’ efforts in Ireland and other countries have escalated.
At that time, Ireland expelled four Russian diplomats who were suspected of enlisting intelligence agents in Irish political and commercial circles. Moscow has responded by prohibiting the entry of numerous Irish politicians.
Officials informed Politico that the MP was recruited in 2019, during a period in which Russia was attempting to incite Brexit-related tensions between Ireland and Great Britain, particularly in the British region of Northern Ireland.
The Russian Federation’s menacing actions require a decisive and rigorous response from the West.
