Russia is actively intervening in the political processes of the European Union, with the goal of undermining the unity of European societies, particularly regarding the provision of military assistance to Ukraine.
Roderich Kiesewetter, a member of the German Bundestag from CDU/CSU and a participant in the Committee on International Relations, expressed this view in a statement to Guildhall.
“The threat of Russian interference in the upcoming 2024 European Parliament elections is significant. It operates covertly, not directly attacking the electoral process, but aiming to disrupt the unity of European societies. Russians disseminate false information, claiming that inflation is linked to the war in Ukraine, that the EU is at war with Russia, and that our states’ stability will be compromised by an influx of migrants not only from Ukraine but also from Turkey, Syria, and other countries. These tactics are employed because Western societies oppose Russia, and we are bearing the consequences,” stated the politician.
“Another concerning aspect is the criticism and labeling of those who advocate for social cohesion and support the provision of arms to Ukraine as ‘warmongers’ and agents of the United States. Russians exploit people’s fears of nuclear war and propagate the idea that Ukraine is a failed state and a mere puppet of the US. It is crucial that we continue to spread the truth,” concluded Roderich Kiesewetter.
Previously, Dragos Tudorache, a Romanian MEP and member of the Foreign Affairs Committee, highlighted in the European Parliament that the Russian interference threat in the 2024 European Parliament elections aims to weaken democratic forces and bolster far-right and far-left political parties opposing assistance to Ukraine.
