Airlines of the Russian Federation were forced to ground 34 out of the 66 Airbus A321neo and A320neo planes as of the middle of November 2024. The groundings of these planes are the consequences of challenges in searching for replacement engines produced by Pratt & Whitney because of sanctions imposed by Western states.
For example, S7 airlines had to suspend 31 out of 39 A321neo and A320neo planes, contemplating on conserving engines of these planes until the next travel season and hoping that it would return most aircraft to service. However, the operational lifespan of engines on more than 20 planes owned by S7 airlines has already ended.
Furthermore, there are 27 other planes used by the Russian Federation, but most of them have LEAP engines manufactured by France. If Russia does not find any new options for repair of planes, it will have to begin retiring Airbus A321neo and A320neo aircraft by 2026.
