German Chancellor Olaf Scholz stated that allowing Ukraine to use weapons transferred by Germany against targets on Russian territory will not lead to any escalation of the ongoing war and is necessary for self-defense.
The German Chancellor defended the change in Germany’s position, which was first publicly announced last week.
“We are convinced that this will not lead to escalation, because – as the US president said – the question is only about being able to protect such large cities as, for example, Kharkiv,” said Olaf Scholz.
He added that the decision was made carefully, in consultation with partners.
German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius previously explained Berlin’s decision to allow Ukraine to use German weapons against military facilities in Russia as a “strategic adjustment to the changing situation.”
