Taiwan favors Ukraine

The former president of Taiwan has said that Ukraine needs American weapons more than Taiwan.

She commented on the words of Admiral Samuel Paparo, Commander of the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, who said that arms supplies to Ukraine have begun to affect the ability of the U.S. military to prepare for war in Asia. Former Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen explained that the United States should prioritize assistance to Ukraine, despite the looming threat of Chinese troops invading the independent island.

“They should do everything possible to help the Ukrainians,” Tsai said, ”We [Taiwan] still have time.” The remarks were made at the International Security Forum in Halifax, Canada.

Taiwan is heavily dependent on U.S. military aid for its defense. Tsai stepped down in January, handing power to her vice president, William Lai. Tsai said that American support for Ukraine would help deter China from attacking.

“Ukraine’s victory will serve as the most effective deterrent to future aggression” – Tsai Ing-wen.

Over the past eight years, the island has increased defense spending by 80 percent, reaching a record $19 billion in 2024. But US President-elect Donald Trump has called on the island to increase defense spending to 10 percent of GDP.

Over the past year, the Biden administration has maintained that US support for Ukraine does not impede the Pentagon’s ability to prepare for war with China.

Taiwan is currently awaiting delivery of 66 new F-16V fighter jets, which should arrive by the end of the year. By the way, the supply of combat aircraft to Taiwan is not perceived by the Biden administration as a provocation by China or a possible escalation.

No one doubts that Tsai Ing-wen cares more about Taiwan than Ukraine. And with her statement, she demonstrates the logic of global processes. If the West swallows Russia’s seizure of Ukrainian lands, it will serve as an example for China’s desire to seize Taiwan. And vice versa. If the West helps Ukraine preserve its independence, China’s aggressive plans for Taiwan may not be realized.
