Norwegian security service reported that Russian intelligence is recruiting local criminals to carry out sabotage missions within Norway, as reported by Dagbladet. According to Beate Gangås, head of the Norwegian Police Security Service (PST), there have been instances across Europe where Russian agents have enlisted criminal organizations for sabotage, and Norway is no exception.
It is known that Russian intelligence recruits these criminals through social media and mobile applications, often without the perpetrators being aware of who their real client is.
Gangås mentioned that several such incidents are currently under investigation in Norway. “Russian intelligence uses criminals to conduct sabotage. From other countries’ services, we know that weapons deliveries to Ukraine are particularly vulnerable. In Norway, we are especially vigilant when it comes to the energy sector,” Gangås told the publication.
This issue has gained particular significance in Norway due to the country’s strategic location and its role in ensuring Europe’s energy security. Critical infrastructure, such as cables and communication lines, are especially vulnerable targets for sabotage.
It is important to note that a sabotage campaign organized by Russia is ongoing throughout Europe, with the goal of undermining Western support for Ukraine. American and European officials have reported attempts to damage railways, military bases, and other facilities used to supply weapons to Ukraine.
Meanwhile, Poland has arrested 18 people accused of planning sabotage. Among those detained by the special services were nine individuals suspected of direct involvement in sabotage activities in Poland on behalf of Russia.
