The country has already received 174 million euros from Denmark for two contracts to send military aid to Ukraine and expects to receive 4 more shortly.
Bulgaria expects to receive 500 million euros in compensation from Ukraine’s allies for military aid to Kyiv. So far, the country’s government has already announced the receipt of 174 million euros from Denmark under two contracts to send military aid to Ukraine and expects at least 300 million euros in compensation from the United States and the European Commission.
Bulgaria is sending its old military equipment, manufactured according to Soviet standards, to Ukraine, and the money it receives from NATO and EU allies can be invested in the purchase of new Western weapons.
“By helping Ukraine, we are helping ourselves,” Defense Minister Atanas Zapryanov said.
According to the country’s defense minister, Bulgaria has sent six packages of military aid to Ukraine, including ammunition, armored vehicles, and faulty air defense missiles that will be used as spare parts. The government is keeping secret what exactly is being sent to Kyiv, but it is known that the main aid is ammunition, as well as missiles for the key S-300 anti-aircraft missile systems. Also in 2024, Bulgaria sent 150 armored vehicles and Soviet-made Gvozdika self-propelled howitzers.
The Bulgarian government has once again confirmed that military aid to Ukraine is primarily beneficial to the country providing this aid. Because it allows it to update its equipment with weapons, and attract more money and people to the country’s economy. This is what Poland, Spain, and the Baltic countries have already said.
“By helping Ukraine, we are helping ourselves” is an excellent and realistic plan for Ukraine’s allies.
