Chief of EU diplomacy: we are close to freezing Russian assets

Josepp Borrell, the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy stated that EU foreign ministers considered the options for using the profits from keeping frozen Russian assets, thus the European Union is approaching a joint political decision on the issue of Russian assets.

The statement had been preceded by the EU Council of Foreign Ministers.

“Regarding blocked Russian assets. We can say that we have political agreement to complete this work based on the proposals that we presented in December 2023, with a focus on accruals. At this time, it is about accruals, about the income from interest rate, and I am convinced that this will be completed soon,” Borrell said.

Borrell added that discussions will be continued at the level of ambassadors, but “an agreement is getting closer.”

“A very strong push for these decisions should be made before the next meeting of the Council of Ministers on Foreign Affairs,” added the high representative of the EU.
