Bundestag to Revisit Issue of Supplying Taurus Missiles to Ukraine

The Bundestag is set to vote again on supplying Ukraine with long-range Taurus cruise missiles, a proposal previously rejected by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. The Free Democratic Party (FDP) plans to introduce the motion during next week’s session, according to FDP parliamentary group leader Christian Dürr.

The U.S. is taking decisive steps by allowing the use of ATACMS missiles. Germany must follow this example and provide Taurus to Ukraine,” Dürr stated.

FDP leader Christian Lindner has also voiced his support for the initiative. “Taurus must now be delivered. The Chancellor always warned against unilateral actions. Now he stands isolated. The USA and others are moving ahead. Germany must follow. The majority in the Bundestag is in favor. Do it!” Lindner emphasized.

The debate over the delivery of Taurus missiles has reignited in Germany, with leaders from the CDU/CSU, FDP, and the Greens calling for swift approval. This renewed discussion follows reports from U.S. media that President Joe Biden authorized Ukraine to use ATACMS missiles for strikes deep into Russian territory.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also appealed directly to Chancellor Scholz, urging Germany to provide long-range weapons to help counter Russia’s aggression. Speaking at a joint briefing with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen in Kyiv on Tuesday, November 19, Zelensky said:

We are working to secure support for long-range capabilities from all countries. I believe that, following the statements on nuclear weapons, it is time for Germany to support the necessary decisions.”

Chancellor Scholz, however, remains firm in his opposition. Deputy government spokesperson Wolfgang Büchner confirmed that Scholz’s position on the matter “has not changed” and reiterated that the chancellor will not alter his stance.

This places Scholz at odds not only with the largest opposition party, the CDU/CSU, but also with his coalition partners, the Greens.

A majority in the Bundestag for a delivery of Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine would have no direct consequences. The decision on this lies with the federal government and ultimately with Scholz, due to the Chancellor’s competence in the guidelines.
