The European Union is considering sanctions against China over evidence that it has supplied weapons to Russia for use in the war against Ukraine.
The German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung reported this.
According to the F.A.Z. source, the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell, has informed member states of intelligence findings on the supply of arms from Russia to China.
At a briefing for journalists on Friday, November 15, the EU official said the evidence was overwhelming and confirmed ‘the provision of lethal weapons’.
Western intelligence suggested as early as September that China was covertly supplying weapons to Russia. Reuters wrote that Russia had developed an arms program in China to develop and produce long-range attack drones.
F.A.Z. also reported that the EU’s reaction would depend on how China responds to the evidence presented to it.
The EU has previously discussed imposing sanctions on Chinese companies but has refrained from doing so. Instead, the US announced sanctions against China for the first time in October over its military support for Russia.
