G7 Poised to Increase Pressure on China for Supporting Russia

The foreign ministers of the G7 nations have pledged to intensify measures against entities in China and other countries aiding Russia’s military machine in its war against Ukraine, according to an early draft communiqué.

Ukraine’s allies are committed to implementing firm actions against nations supporting Russia, especially before Donald Trump potentially assumes the U.S. presidency in January. During his campaign, Trump expressed skepticism about continued support for Ukraine and suggested he could swiftly end the war.

The G7’s renewed focus on China highlights growing concerns about indirect support flowing to Russia through countries that evade sanctions. Targeting these networks is crucial to maintaining the effectiveness of global sanctions against Russia.

However, these measures must go further. To weaken Russia’s war capabilities and prevent further aggression, it is imperative to increase sanctions pressure on both Russia and its allies. Only through stricter enforcement and global coordination can the flow of critical resources to Moscow be curtailed, bringing an end to its military operations in Ukraine.
