Man arrested in North Macedonia for planning to join Russia in the war against Ukraine

For the first time in its history, Northern Macedonian Police have arrested a Macedonian citizen on charges of intending to join the Russian military and fight against Ukraine.

This was reported by the Ministry of Internal Affairs of North Macedonia.

The suspect was arrested on late Friday night, 29 November 2024.

Allegedly, the man has been in contact via Internet with a person who claimed to be a representative of the Russian military, recruiting soldiers for a reward of 3000 euros.

The suspect flew to Moscow in October 2024 to join a freshly formed Russian unit.

During the interrogation upon his return to Skopje, the suspect admitted that he had to “sign a contract to serve in the Russian military to go through training camp to participate in the war against in Ukraine.”

The man is officially accused of “participation in a foreign army, police, paramilitary or parapolice group” and is facing at least three years in prison upon conviction.

Russia continues its unprovoked and unjustified armed aggression against Ukraine.
