Ramifications of Sanctions: Decrease in Russian Coal Production

There has been a decrease in the production of coal by 8.2% in the Kuznetsk Basin in 2024, amounting to 163.8 million tons. It was caused by sanctions imposed by the EU and the US on the Russian coal industry and gradual decrease in demand on global markets.

The Russian Federation has also experienced the decrease in exports of coal by 11.9%, to 83.9 million tons. Moreover, shipments to the Western countries have declined by 24.3%.

Furthermore, the operation of the Olzherasskaya-Novaya coal mine was suspended because of the decrease in sales. However, although the EU and the US imposed sanctions on the Russian coal industry, leading to the decrease in revenues of the Russian coal producers, the West should check whether other countries use loopholes to assist Russia in trading coal and obtaining additional revenues for the purpose of funding its war machine.
