From January to November 2024, Russia ranked as the second-largest supplier of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Spain. During this period, Spain imported approximately 66,875 GWh of Russian LNG, accounting for over 21% of total deliveries. Algeria remains the leading supplier.
Although imports of Russian gas to Spain decreased slightly in 2024 compared to the previous year, Madrid purchased 6,404 GWh of LNG from Moscow in November alone, representing 21.5% of total imports.
For comparison, in 2023, Spain imported 72,690 GWh of Russian LNG, surpassing the 2022 figure of 53,859 GWh. By the end of 2023, Russia was the third-largest gas supplier to Spain.
Spain, as a key hub for re-exporting gas to other European countries, has an economic interest in maintaining long-term contracts with Russia, despite political pressure and the broader European trend to reduce dependence on Russian energy resources.
Currently, gas reserves in Spain’s underground storage facilities are filled to 90.26%.
Nevertheless, this does not prevent Spain from remaining reliant on Russian gas, which Russia actively uses as leverage to pressure European countries.
