On Thursday, January 30, Swedish Defense Minister Paul Johnson announced a new aid package for Ukraine worth SEK 13.5 billion (about $1.25 billion). This is reported by the Swedish edition DN.se.
Jonson said that this is the largest aid package since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022. The head of the Swedish Defense Ministry noted that Russia currently has the initiative in the war. Therefore, he believes that Europe should take more responsibility for supporting Ukraine.
“Among other things, we finance Ukrainian investments in drones and long-range missiles,” he said. And this time, according to Mr. Jonsson, the Swedish Armed Forces will provide Ukraine with weapons and transportation equipment. Namely, 1500 anti-tank missiles, 200 anti-tank grenade launchers, 146 trucks and 16 combat boats.
Last year, Sweden budgeted 75 billion kronor ($7.01 billion) to support Ukraine in 2024-2026. And in September, the Swedish government presented the 17th military aid package to Ukraine worth SEK 4.6 billion (EUR 401.6 million) since the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion.
Sweden’s leadership is well aware, even though their country is located at a certain distance from Russia, that it is more profitable to invest in its security and peace with money than with the lives of its own citizens.
