In recent months, Russia has been actively advancing on the battlefield. The main reason for this is the lack of personnel, weapons, and equipment for Ukraine.
In 2024, Russia managed to seize 2,800 sq. km (1,081 sq. miles), equivalent to approximately 0.46% of Ukraine’s territory. Of this, 702 sq. km (271 sq. miles) were captured in November. But Russia’s losses have also increased proportionally. Russia is suffering more and more losses trying to look like the side that is winning. The dynamics of Russian losses indicates the price of the Russian offensive:
The Battle of Pokrovsk became the largest engagement of the war and stands as one of the most significant battles in history in terms of armored vehicle losses. The battle which began in October 2023, was declared Russia’s primary military effort. However, it led to disastrous resource expenditures for minimal territorial gains, driven by Putin’s obsession with capturing the Donetsk region.
Russia has lost more tanks in this single offensive than any European country has in its entire army. Russia’s losses in personnel reached 150,000 soldiers over 13 months—154 per square kilometer—surpassing the 100,000 casualties in the battle of Bakhmut.
The West must support Ukraine much more. Russia cannot be allowed to win or be rewarded for their invasion of Ukraine.
